Experienced Legspinner Chahal Joins Northamptonshire for County Cricket Campaign

Veteran Indian Spinner Joins County Side

Yuzvendra Chahal, a 34-year-old Indian legspinner, has signed with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club for the remainder of their 2024 domestic season. Chahal will link up with the squad ahead of Wednesday’s County Championship clash against Kent and will be available for the club’s red-ball fixtures for the rest of the campaign.

“Yuzvendra is another high-profile overseas player who brings with him a wealth of experience and some incredible skills,” said Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler. “His record speaks for itself and his wicket-taking ability will add strength to our attack.”

This is not Chahal’s first stint with a County side, as he had previously spent time with Kent in the 2023 season, where he picked up nine wickets in two matches.

Chahal, who became the first bowler in IPL history to reach 200 wickets earlier this year, was part of India’s victorious 2024 T20 World Cup squad, though he did not feature in any of the matches. This move to Northamptonshire will provide him with an opportunity to stay match-fit and further develop his red-ball skills, as the selectors continue to keep him in the mix as a backup option, especially for the shortest format.

Northamptonshire are currently placed eighth in the nine-team One-Day Cup Group A table, having won just one of their seven matches so far this season. The addition of Chahal’s expertise and experience is expected to bolster their chances as they look to improve their form in the remaining fixtures.
