Promising Young Cricketers Shine in Rain-Affected Draw at Wormsley
The first Men’s Youth Test between England U19 and Sri Lanka U19 at Wormsley is headed for a rain-affected draw, but not without some standout individual performances.
Freddie McCann, the young Nottinghamshire opener, fell just short of a second century this summer, scoring 92 runs before being stumped. His 160-run partnership with Keshana Fonseka (72* at stumps) was the highlight of England’s resilient response after Sri Lanka had posted 324 in the first innings.
“Freddie McCann’s impressive innings was a testament to his growing talent and maturity as a young cricketer.”
Sri Lanka captain Dinuru Kalupahana had earlier reached his maiden international century, while Surrey Academy quick Alex French was the pick of the England bowlers with figures of 4/81.
Despite losing three late wickets, England U19 closed the day on 193/4, trailing Sri Lanka by 131 runs with one day remaining. Backyard cricket enthusiasts will be hoping for a thrilling conclusion, while beach cricket and club cricket fans will be eager to see how these young talents fare in the second innings.
