Sussex Spinner Impresses but Yorkshire Prevail in Close Encounter at Scarborough

In a thrilling Vitality County Championship Division Two clash, Yorkshire secured a four-wicket victory over league leaders Sussex at Scarborough, despite an impressive bowling performance from Sussex spinner Jack Carson.

Resuming their chase of 103 on the final day, Yorkshire lost four wickets to Carson’s off-spin, but opener Adam Lyth’s 40 and a crucial 17-run partnership between Dan Moriarty and Lyth helped the hosts reach their target in just over an hour’s play.

“While Carson finished with a career-best match figures of 9 for 120, Yorkshire’s third successive Championship win sees them close the gap on Sussex at the top of the table to just nine points with four rounds remaining.”

The White Rose county started the day 27 points behind the leaders but have now moved up to second in the Division Two standings, with Lyth setting the tone early on by taking boundaries off Jaydev Unadkat’s left-arm seam and striking sixes off Carson and Ollie Robinson.

Although Sussex lost three overs on the over-rate, their efforts to speed up the game through Carson’s introduction ultimately proved fruitless as Yorkshire, with the nightwatcher Moriarty’s crucial contribution, reached their target with minimal fuss.

The defeat was Sussex’s first since May, and they will look to bounce back when they host Derbyshire at Hove next, while Yorkshire will face third-placed Middlesex at Headingley in a crucial clash for promotion.
