Wriddhiman Saha Eager to Rekindle Bengal Cricket Journey, Leaves Past Behind

Veteran wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha has expressed his unwavering commitment to Bengal cricket, putting aside any past issues with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). Saha, who represented the Bengal team from 2007 to 2022, is determined to contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming domestic season.

Speaking at the Eden Gardens, Saha made it clear that he has no desire to dwell on the past and is solely focused on the present, stating, “All I am thinking about is about playing for Bengal. I have forgotten everything that happened in the past.” The 39-year-old cricketer is open to exploring coaching opportunities with the Bengal team in the future, should the occasion arise.

Saha’s return to Bengal comes after a brief stint with Tripura, which was prompted by a clash of words with the CAB joint-secretary. However, the experienced wicket-keeper is now eager to put that behind and work towards Bengal’s pursuit of the elusive Ranji Trophy title.

Bengal, who have been knocking on the doors of a Ranji Trophy triumph for the past four years, reaching the final twice, will benefit greatly from Saha’s expertise and guidance.

The team’s management is delighted to have Saha, a “son of the soil,” back in the fold, along with former vice-captain Sudip Chatterjee.

Saha’s availability, however, presents a selection dilemma for Bengal, with the team now boasting two high-quality wicket-keepers, including the promising Abishek Porel. Saha has assured that he will wholeheartedly support Porel’s growth, ensuring that the young talent does not fall by the wayside.

The issue of the lack of Bengali cricketers in the Bengal team has been a concern among some fans, but Saha believes that merit should be the primary criterion for selection, irrespective of a player’s regional background. He emphasized that players like Shahbaz Ahmed, Akash Deep, and Abhimanyu Easwaran, who have trained with the Bengal team from a young age, are as much a part of the team as any other.

As Wriddhiman Saha embarks on this new chapter with Bengal cricket, he remains focused on the task at hand, determined to contribute to the team’s success through his on-field performances and off-field guidance. His presence will undoubtedly be a valuable asset as Bengal seek to end their long wait for a Ranji Trophy triumph.
