West Indies Women Secure Series Win with Convincing Chase in Final T20I
Hambantota, June 28, 2024 – In a dominant display, the West Indies women’s cricket team clinched the T20I series against Sri Lanka with a six-wicket victory in the final match. The top-three batters for the visitors controlled the chase of 142, easily securing the win despite the narrow margin, which concealed the control they had throughout the innings.
Stafanie Taylor, Hayley Matthews, and Shemaine Campbelle led the charge for the West Indies, with Campbelle remaining unbeaten on a 30-ball 41 to guide her team to the target with just one ball to spare. The opening pair of Taylor and Matthews had laid the foundation with a 60-run stand in just 48 deliveries, before Matthews and Campbelle added a 51-run partnership off 44 balls.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had posted a competitive total of 141 for 7 after being put in to bat first. Chamari Athapaththu top-scored with 38, while Kavisha Dilhari contributed a quickfire 26 off 22 balls. However, the West Indian bowlers, led by Afy Fletcher and Alleyne, kept the hosts in check, picking up two wickets each.
“Despite the late drama caused by the dismissals of Chedean Nation and Aaliyah Alleyne in the 18th and 19th overs, the visitors’ superior batting performance ensured they completed the chase with minimal fuss, showcasing their all-round dominance in the series.”
The result sees the West Indies women clinch the T20I series 2-1, bouncing back from an opening defeat to claim a well-deserved series victory. The team’s ability to chase down a challenging target with composure and control will serve as a significant confidence boost as they continue their preparations for upcoming cricketing challenges.
