West Indies Sweep South Africa 3-0 Ahead of 2024 T20 World Cup
In the lead-up to the highly anticipated 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the West Indies, co-hosts of the event, faced off against South Africa at home and emerged victorious with a dominant 3-0 series sweep. Despite missing some key players, the West Indies showcased their prowess, solidifying their position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings.
With the series win, the West Indies, the champions of the 2012 and 2016 editions of the T20 World Cup, now sit at fourth place in the rankings, led by 2007 champions India, followed by 2021 champions Australia and defending champions England in second and third place, respectively.
Individual Standouts
The series provided individual bright spots for the West Indies, with several players making significant gains in the T20I Player Rankings. Stand-in skipper Brandon King, who amassed 159 runs, jumped up five places to eighth in the Men’s T20I Batting Rankings. His opening partner, Johnson Charles, stood out with a blistering 69 from 26 balls in the third game, earning him a 17-spot rise to the 20th position.
Other notable performers included Kyle Mayers, who moved up to the 31st place in the Batting Rankings, and Gudakesh Motie, who climbed to the 27th position in the Bowling Rankings.
“These impressive results bode well for the West Indies as they prepare to host the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they will be seeking a record third title.”
The Men in Maroon are placed in Group C, alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda, and will kick off their campaign against Papua New Guinea in Guyana on June 2.
