Victoria Prevails Despite Rocchiccioli’s Hat-Trick
Melbourne, 18 November 2024 – In a thrilling Sheffield Shield encounter, Victoria secured a commanding eight-wicket victory over Western Australia, despite a rare hat-trick by spinner Corey Rocchiccioli.
Chasing a modest target of 120 runs for victory on the final day at Junction Oval, Victoria’s opening pair of Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb went on the attack, forging an unbeaten 103-run partnership for the third wicket.
Rocchiccioli’s heroics, which saw him dismiss Ashley Chandrasinghe and Campbell Kellaway with the first two deliveries, briefly gave Western Australia hope of an unlikely win. However, skipper Handscomb and the in-form Harris thwarted any such aspirations, guiding the hosts to a comfortable triumph.
Earlier, Western Australia were dismissed for 325 in their second innings, with wicketkeeper Joel Curtis striking a maiden first-class century. Curtis’s unbeaten 119 was a valiant effort, but it ultimately proved insufficient to prevent Victoria’s dominance.
Allrounder Sam Elliott continued his impressive form, claiming four wickets for the match, while paceman Fergus O’Neill and spinner Todd Murphy were also instrumental in setting up the victory for the home side.
“The match showcased the depth of talent in Australian domestic cricket, with the likes of backyard cricket, beach cricket, Chester le Street cricket, club cricket, and fantasy club cricket enthusiasts eager to follow the latest developments in the Sheffield Shield.”
