Cricket Enthusiast’s Edge: Tim David Unleashes Legspin Arsenal Ahead of T20 World Cup Super Eights
As the T20 World Cup moves fully to the West Indies, spin is poised to become the dominant force, and Australian all-rounder Tim David is preparing to capitalize on this shift. The big-hitting finisher, who has been honing his part-time offspinning skills, has now added legspin to his repertoire, providing his team with an additional weapon in their arsenal.
“I started bowling legspin in nets about nine months ago, and they came out really well,” David revealed ahead of Australia’s first Super Eight clash against Bangladesh in Antigua.
With the team’s frontline spinners, Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa, offering guidance and support, David is confident that his newfound bowling skills will give the side greater flexibility and match-up options.
“It just gives you options as a match-up,” the 27-year-old explained. “I’ve been working really hard on it, and to be honest, I really enjoy bowling. It’s more fun in the game than just sitting there for 20 overs in the field.”
As Australia navigates a challenging group that includes Bangladesh, India, and Afghanistan, the team is wary of the threat posed by spin bowling. The emergence of Bangladeshi legspinner Rishad Hossain has caught their attention, but David and his teammates are undaunted.
“I’ve practiced a lot against spin over the last couple of weeks,” David said. “Day before a game or couple of days before game, it’s not that big of a stress. You know if you can’t change too much in that last stage.”
One factor the Australian all-rounder will be closely monitoring is the wind direction at the ground, which can significantly impact the trajectory and distance of the ball.
“The wind’s really important,” he emphasized. “You hit the ball into the wind, it goes 50 metres shorter; you get one downwind, you can’t stop it.”
With his newfound legspin skills and a keen understanding of the conditions, Tim David aims to provide Australia with an added dimension as they navigate the challenges of the T20 World Cup Super Eights in the West Indies.
