Sussex Sharks Triumph Over Surrey in Metro Bank One-Day Cup
On August 11th, 2024, the Sussex Sharks secured their first Metro Bank One-Day Cup victory of the season, defeating Surrey by six wickets at Hove. The win upheld their eight-year unbeaten List A record against their local rivals.
Sussex, who had lost their first six matches in the competition, made a strong comeback, thanks to a solid partnership between left-handed batters Tom Haines and Tom Alsop. Haines scored a 95-ball 79, while Alsop remained unbeaten on a match-winning 108 from 130 deliveries, guiding his team to a comfortable victory.
Earlier, Surrey had posted a respectable 242 runs, with Ben Geddes (81) and Josh Blake (53) laying a solid foundation. However, the Sussex spinners, Archie Lenham and Jack Carson, tightened the screws, and the visitors lost their last seven wickets for just 57 runs.
“The match was played on the same pitch that had produced a high-scoring affair the previous week, but this surface was a bit slower. Despite the challenging conditions, Alsop’s sixth List A century proved to be the difference, as he steered Sussex to their first win of the campaign.”
The victory was crucial for Sussex, who remain at the bottom of Group B but have now maintained their impressive eight-year unbeaten streak against Surrey in List A cricket.
