Sussex in Strong Position Against Leicestershire Thanks to Captain John Simpson’s Ton

In a commanding display, Sussex captain John Simpson scored his third century of the season to put his team in a dominant position against Leicestershire at Hove. Simpson came in at 34-3 and played a chanceless innings of 180 not out, guiding Sussex to a total of 431-7.

The opening batsman Oli Carter, who was brought in to replace the injured Daniel Hughes, put on a 156-run partnership with Simpson for the fourth wicket in just 34 overs. Carter scored a solid 96 off 142 balls, including 15 fours and a six, before being caught and bowled by Scott Currie.

Leicestershire made an impressive start, with Ian Holland striking twice in four balls in the sixth over to dismiss Tom Haines and Tom Alsop. But Simpson then took control, scoring runs freely against some ragged bowling and shoddy fielding from the opposition.

“The lunch score was 84-3 after 29 overs, but Sussex ran riot in the afternoon session, scoring 197 runs.”

Carter was the fourth wicket to fall at 190, but Fynn Hudson-Prentice (26) and Nathan McAndrew (51* not out) helped extend Sussex’s advantage.

Despite a brief fightback from Leicestershire, which saw them dismiss Danny Lamb and Jack Carson (25), Sussex remained firmly in control at the close of play, thanks to their captain’s brilliant century. This result keeps Sussex at the top of the table with three wins so far this season.
