Surrey Close With Lead of 133, After Spinner Will Jacks Claims Seven Wickets

In a thrilling day of County Championship action at Trent Bridge, Surrey’s young spinner Will Jacks produced a career-best performance, claiming 7 for 129 as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 405 in response to Surrey’s 525. Despite the heroics of 19-year-old Freddie McCann’s maiden first-class century, Surrey now hold a commanding 133-run lead heading into the final day.

Play was soured in the afternoon, however, when Jacks, who has been selected in both of England’s white-ball squads for their upcoming games against Australia, was penalized for throwing the ball in an “inappropriate or dangerous manner” towards the wicketkeeper after smartly fielding a pull shot. The matter has been referred to Surrey for further disciplinary action.

Nonetheless, Jacks remained a constant threat, picking up the crucial wickets of McCann (154) and Jack Haynes (68) as Nottinghamshire fought to reach the follow-on target of 376. Kyle Verreynne’s unbeaten 50 from just 60 balls helped the home side pass that mark, but they were eventually dismissed for 405, giving Surrey a useful first-innings lead.

In their second innings, Surrey lost the early wicket of Dom Sibley, but they will resume on the fourth day with a solid advantage of 133 runs and seven wickets in hand as they seek their eighth win in nine games and a third successive County Championship title.
