Sri Lanka Wins Toss, Opts to Bat First in ODI Series Opener Against New Zealand

On October 6th, 2023, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first in the opening One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand at the Dambulla International Cricket Stadium. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka believed the surface would deteriorate as the match progressed, making batting more challenging in the latter stages.

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner expressed no concerns about bowling first, acknowledging the possibility of rain and a wet outfield later in the day potentially impacting his bowlers’ effectiveness.

“We’re happy to bowl first and see how the conditions play out. The weather might play a factor later in the day, so we’ll look to make the most of the new ball upfront.”

The visitors have handed ODI debuts to three players – opening batter Tim Robinson, wicketkeeper-batter Mitchell Hay, and seam-bowling all-rounder Nathan Smith. However, Adam Milne, who was brought in as a replacement for the injured Lockie Ferguson, was not available for selection.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have recalled left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka to their lineup. They have also been forced to make a change due to an injury, with Jeffrey Vandersay replacing the unavailable Wanindu Hasaranga.

With a wealth of bowling options in their top seven, including Asalanka, Kamindu Mendis, and Janith Liyanage, Sri Lanka will be looking to put on a strong batting performance and capitalize on the home conditions.

The match promises to be an intriguing encounter, with both teams aiming to gain the early advantage in the series. Cricket enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting battle between the two sides, as they compete in the 100-ball cricket live format.
