Downpour Delays Cricket Clash as Sri Lanka and Nepal Split Points
Lauderhill, June 12, 2024: In a match marred by inclement weather, the highly anticipated clash between Sri Lanka and Nepal at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 had to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. Incessant rain, heavy enough to trigger flash-flood alerts for local residents, left both teams sharing a point each, complicating their road to the Super Eights.
The washout means Sri Lanka’s hopes of qualification are now severely dented, as they rely on a combination of other results, including a washout, to have any chance of reaching the next round. Nepal’s path to the Super Eights also took a hit, with their net run-rate likely to suffer from the no-result.
Group D Standings and Qualification Scenarios
South Africa, the current Group D toppers, have already secured their place in the Super Eights, leaving Sri Lanka and Nepal to fight for the remaining spot. For Sri Lanka to now qualify, they first need Bangladesh and Netherlands to play out a washout on June 13, and then defeat the Dutch in their final group-stage game on June 16. They also require South Africa to beat Nepal by a narrow margin on June 14, and then for Nepal to overcome Bangladesh by a significant margin on June 16.
Nepal, on the other hand, could still qualify if they can secure convincing wins against South Africa and Bangladesh in their last two matches, provided the Netherlands don’t win both their remaining fixtures.
The abandoned match in Lauderhill has now put upcoming games at the venue under the scanner, with rain forecast for the week. The venue is set to host three Group A matches, featuring India, Pakistan, Canada, USA and Ireland (twice), between June 14 and June 16, which could be impacted by the weather conditions.
