Shreyas Iyer’s Triumphant Journey: KKR’s IPL 2024 Glory
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) recently clinched their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title, with Shreyas Iyer leading the charge. The Chelsea fan and former Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper guided his team to victory, exorcizing the ghosts of their 2020 final defeat.
Outclassing the Competition
Under Iyer’s captaincy, the Gautam Gambhir-mentored KKR side outclassed former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a one-sided final at the Chepauk. Table-toppers KKR hammered Pat Cummins and Co. by eight wickets to claim the IPL 2024 crown.
Overcoming Adversity
Iyer, who was snubbed from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) central contract list, had a recurring back injury that derailed his comeback as a premier batter in competitive cricket this year. However, he bounced back with a vengeance, showcasing his leadership skills and guiding KKR to their first IPL title under his captaincy.
Emerging Talent
Interestingly, Iyer was the Emerging Player of the IPL back in 2015, when he smashed 439 runs in 14 games. This season, the same award was handed over to SRH’s Nitish Kumar Reddy, who scored 303 runs at an average of 33.67 and a strike rate of 142.92, while also picking up two wickets.
Breakout Stars
Among the other breakout stars of IPL 2024 were:
- SRH opener Abhishek Sharma, who dominated the powerplay with his explosive batting
- DC’s Jake Fraser-McGurk, who had an impressive debut season with a strike rate of over 234
- England’s Will Jacks, who scored a stunning century for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
- Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) Mayank Yadav, who became the talk of the town with his blistering pace, clocking 156.7kph, the fastest ball of the tournament
“Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy and leadership were instrumental in KKR’s success this season. He has proved himself as one of the most exciting young talents in Indian cricket.”
