Cartwright’s Ton Puts Western Australia in Control Against Tasmania

On Day 3 of the Sheffield Shield match between Tasmania and Western Australia at Bellerive Oval, Hilton Cartwright’s superb century and crucial contributions from Jayden Goodwin and Ashton Agar put the visitors in a commanding position.

Resuming on 460 for 9 declared, Western Australia batted deep into the day, with Cartwright scoring a fluent 153 off 278 balls, including 18 fours. His partnerships of 148 with Goodwin (94) and 158 with Agar (74) ensured WA secured a substantial first-innings lead of 143 over Tasmania’s 317.

“Hilton Cartwright’s century was a crucial innings that put Western Australia in a strong position,” said the coach.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann was the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers, claiming 5 for 100, but the home side’s attack toiled hard on a flat pitch across 161 overs.

In a tricky final session, WA’s new-ball pair of Joel Paris and Gabe Bell struck early, dismissing openers Jake Weatherald and Caleb Jewell cheaply to leave Tasmania reeling at 10 for 2 and still trailing by 133 runs.

The defending champions Western Australia, who had beaten Tasmania by six wickets a fortnight ago, strengthened their position at the top of the Sheffield Shield table after this dominant day’s play.
