Veteran Opener Rohit Sharma to Spearhead Mumbai Indians’ Charge in Upcoming IPL

Mumbai, December 23, 2023 – In a move that will delight Mumbai Indians (MI) fans, star opener Rohit Sharma has committed to continue representing the franchise in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Rohit, who has been synonymous with MI’s success over the years, will remain a vital cog in the team’s lineup despite recent rumors of a potential move.

Speaking to JioCinema, Rohit expressed his deep connection with the city of Mumbai and the franchise he has played for since the inception of the IPL. “> I have played so much cricket in Mumbai, this is the place where I started my cricket career. So this city is very, very special. Obviously, when you play for such a long time, you create so many memories with the team,” he said.

While Rohit has been replaced as captain by Hardik Pandya, he will continue to open the innings for the team. The 100-ball cricket live enthusiast acknowledged the team’s recent struggles, stating, “> We haven’t had the best of the season in the last two or three years. But we are quite determined to change that.”

Rohit, who was retained at INR 16.30 crore, is part of a formidable Indian core at MI, which includes the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav. The veteran opener’s decision to remain with the franchise despite being the fourth-highest earner during the retention process reflects his commitment to the team and the city he calls home.

“Since I have retired from the format, I think this is the perfect [retention] spot for me. The players who are representing the national team at the highest level should get the preference. That’s what I believe in and I am quite happy with it,” Rohit said.

As MI gear up for the upcoming IPL season, their fans can look forward to witnessing Rohit Sharma’s ageless brilliance on the field, as the team seeks to reclaim their position as one of the most successful franchises in the league.
