Cricket Enthusiasts Rejoice: Tasmanian Stadium to Revolutionize All-Weather Play
In a groundbreaking move for the sport, a new stadium in Hobart, Tasmania, is set to become the world’s first all-weather cricket venue. Designed as part of a deal to bring an AFL team to the island state, the Macquarie Point stadium will feature a unique roof system that promises to extend the cricket season and eliminate rain-related interruptions.
Bringing the AFL to Tasmania
The 23,000-seat roofed stadium, located on the Hobart waterfront, is a key condition for Tasmania’s entry into the AFL, slated for 2028. Sport and Events Minister Nic Street emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a “welcoming, functional and uniquely Tasmanian” multipurpose facility that will offer much more than just AFL games.
Innovative Design and Features
The stadium’s design, inspired by the Hobart Rail Yard’s roundhouse structure and the region’s maritime heritage, boasts a woven-style facade and a transparent roof supported by an internal steel and timber frame. This innovative roof design, which was guided by Aboriginal community members, aims to showcase Tasmanian timber and provide natural ventilation, effectively extending the grass-growing season.
“Cricket’s biggest concern was the height of the roof, but we’ve addressed that,” said Alistair Richardson, CEO of Cox Architecture. “The height means the ball is unlikely to hit the roof, and there will be no need for rain breaks, which is especially exciting for the cricket fraternity.”
The stadium’s features include a 1,500-person function room with views of Kunanyi/Mount Wellington, a stage pocket in the northern stand to support concerts and events, and accessible design elements like a continuous concourse serving the entire venue.
Addressing Concerns and Commitment to Investment
While some critics, like Greens MP Cassy O’Connor, have raised concerns about the project’s impact on the Macquarie Point site, the Tasmanian government remains committed to the $375 million investment, with private funding covering any overruns.
For cricket enthusiasts, the prospect of an all-weather stadium in Tasmania promises to revolutionize the sport, allowing for uninterrupted play and extended seasons. From backyard cricket to club matches and beyond, this innovative facility is set to become a beacon for cricket lovers, both in Tasmania and across the globe.
