Persistent rain disrupts play on second day of Lancashire-Nottinghamshire County Championship match

Southport, XX June – The highly anticipated County Championship clash between Lancashire and Nottinghamshire at Southport was plagued by inclement weather on the second day, with no play possible throughout the day.

Despite early showers, umpires Martin Saggers and Tom Lungley had initially scheduled the resumption of Lancashire’s first innings at 12:30 BST. However, prolonged rainfall returned to the area, forcing the officials to eventually abandon play for the day at 16:05.

The abandonment was particularly disappointing for spectators who had travelled to Trafalgar Road in the hope of witnessing Lancashire veteran James Anderson in action. Anderson, who is set to play his 188th and final Test match for England against the West Indies at Lord’s next week, was expected to feature in this county clash.

Should play resume on Tuesday, Lancashire will continue their first innings at 344-8, with captain Keaton Jennings unbeaten on 183.

This was only the second time in 31 days that a full day’s play has been abandoned at the Southport venue, where first-class cricket returned in 2011 after a 12-year hiatus.
