Cricket Enthusiasts Await PNG’s Resilience Against Afghanistan and New Zealand

Papua New Guinea (PNG) captain Assad Vala acknowledged that his team’s batters couldn’t adapt to the challenging Providence Stadium pitch during their T20 World Cup 2024 match against Uganda on Wednesday. Succumbing to a low-scoring defeat, Vala emphasized that their “energy, determination, and attitude” will be crucial for their upcoming fixtures against Afghanistan and New Zealand.

Vala expressed disappointment in his team’s “soft dismissals” that resulted in a meager total of 77 runs, their lowest in T20I history. However, he praised the efforts of his bowlers, who reduced Uganda to 6 for 3 in the third over, before the opponents eventually secured a comfortable victory.

“We are coming up against two Full Member nations in Afghanistan and New Zealand in the next two games in Trinidad. I think we need to be up for that,” he said.

The captain emphasized the importance of maintaining the right “energy, determination and attitude” when facing top cricketing nations, drawing parallels to their impressive performance against the West Indies in the opening game. “We got outplayed today, to be honest. We didn’t play as well as we did against West Indies so we need to have the right attitude in the next two games,” Vala added.

Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await to see if PNG can recapture their early tournament form and showcase their resilience against the formidable opponents of Afghanistan and New Zealand in the upcoming fixtures.
