Cricket’s Lowest Total: Northern Diamonds Trample Thunder in Charlotte Edwards Cup

In a dominant display at Durham’s Seat Unique Riverside, the Northern Diamonds bowled out their arch-rivals Lancashire Thunder for a mere 61 runs – the lowest total in the four-year history of the Charlotte Edwards Cup. The Diamonds then secured a comfortable five-wicket victory, chasing down the target with 6.2 overs to spare.

Scotland left-arm seamer Rachel Slater was the star of the show, returning outstanding figures of 3 for 12 from her four-over spell with the new ball. Opener Lizzie Scott also struck twice, while off-spinner Erin Burns claimed two wickets as well. With the helpful bowling conditions, Thunder slipped to a dismal 19 for 4 inside the first five overs, a position from which they never recovered.

“Only three Thunder batters managed to reach double figures, with Tara Norris’ 13 being the highest individual score. The procession of wickets continued, and Thunder were bowled out in just under 15 overs, setting a new record low total in the competition’s history.”

While the Diamonds also stumbled in their chase, slipping to 37 for 4, former Thunder batter Rebecca Duckworth remained unbeaten on 21 to guide her side over the line. Both teams finished the competition with three wins from their 10 matches, with the Diamonds winning their last two games and Thunder losing their final two.

This was the first of two Roses T20 matches in as many nights, with the men’s teams set to face off at Headingley in the Vitality Blast the following day. The emphatic victory for the Northern Diamonds over their fierce rivals was a clear statement of intent from the White Rose county in the opening salvo of this cricketing battle.
