Namibia Start T20 World Cup 2024 Campaign with Super Over Thriller against Oman
Namibia got their T20 World Cup 2024 journey off to a dramatic start, defeating Oman in a thrilling Super Over encounter. The match ended in a tie after both teams scored 109 runs in their respective innings, setting the stage for a nail-biting one-over eliminator.
In the Super Over, Namibia’s David Wiese provided the early fireworks, drilling a full delivery through the covers and then smashing a juicy full toss for a massive six. Gerhard Erasmus then flick-swept a boundary through square leg, and Namibia posted a daunting 21-run target for Oman.
Wiese then stepped up with the ball, conceding just two runs off his first two deliveries before dismissing Naseem Khushi, as Oman fell short, managing only 10 runs. Wiese’s all-round heroics made him just the fourth player in men’s T20I history to bat and bowl in a Super Over.
“It was an absolute rollercoaster of a game, but I’m proud of the way the team kept their composure in the end to get the win,” said Namibia captain Erasmus.
Earlier, Namibia’s modest chase was anchored by Jan Frylinck‘s 45-ball 45, but they were made to work hard for the victory. Oman’s Mehran Khan bowled a tight final over, nearly stealing the game for his side before Wiese’s late-innings heroics.
Oman had earlier put up a fighting total of 109, with Zeeshan Maqsood and Ayaan Khan leading the way. However, Namibia’s bowling attack, led by Ruben Trumpelmann and Wiese, kept the opposition in check, restricting Oman to just 29 runs in a crucial 10-over stretch.
Despite Oman’s valiant effort to push the match to a Super Over, Namibia’s composure in the one-over eliminator proved to be the difference, securing a thrilling victory to begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a high note.
