Ahead of the Upcoming IPL 2025 Mega Auction, Mumbai Indians Set to Retain Tilak Varma Alongside Four Major Indian Players
Mumbai, October 31, 2024 – In a strategic move, Mumbai Indians (MI) are poised to retain five capped players for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. Alongside the retention of their star Indian players – Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav – the franchise has decided to retain the promising youngster Tilak Varma as their fifth capped player.
The retention of these five players will significantly impact MI’s auction purse, as they are expected to lose at least INR 75 crore from their INR 120 crore kitty. The exact individual amounts for each retained player are yet to be determined, but the franchise may have to pay a higher aggregate sum to secure their core team.
MI’s previous IPL 2024 campaign was a disappointment, as they finished at the bottom of the league. The leadership transition from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya, who was traded in from Gujarat Titans, received mixed reactions from fans, with Hardik being regularly booed at various venues. However, Hardik bounced back with impressive performances during India’s successful 2024 T20 World Cup campaign.
“Interestingly, Suryakumar Yadav was later preferred as India’s T20I captain, replacing the retired Rohit Sharma, even though Hardik had captained the national team in T20Is for much of 2023.”
The MI management recently held discussions with their senior players to align on the plan going forward, leading to the decision to retain the five capped players. With this strategic move, the franchise aims to maintain its core team and build on their future success in the IPL.
