Manchester Originals Prevail in Thriller, Mooney Shines with Second-Highest Hundred in Women’s Hundred
In a Thrilling Encounter, Originals Defeat Superchargers
In a thrilling encounter, the Manchester Originals defeated their cross-Pennines rivals, the Northern Superchargers, by 17 runs in the women’s Hundred competition. The Originals’ star performer was Australian left-handed batter Beth Mooney, who recorded the second-highest individual score in the tournament’s history.
Batting first, the Originals posted an impressive total of 151 for 3, largely thanks to Mooney’s unbeaten 99. The world’s top-ranked T20I batter was in supreme form, finding the gaps with ease and showcasing the class that has earned her the coveted number one spot. Mooney’s innings was the highest individual score in the Hundred this year, falling agonizingly short of the tournament’s second-ever century when she was run out seeking a second run off the final delivery.
“It was a lot of fun. I thought Laura Wolvaardt and I set the game up nicely at the top, and obviously Kathyrn Bryce finished it beautifully getting a five-fer there. A pretty good day out for the Originals,” said Meerkat Match Hero Mooney.
Despite missing out on the century landmark, Mooney’s masterful knock laid the foundation for the Originals’ victory. In response, the Superchargers made a spirited attempt to chase down the target, led by fellow Australian Phoebe Litchfield’s impressive 45 from 29 balls. However, when Litchfield was dismissed, the Superchargers ran out of steam, eventually finishing on 134 for 8.
Originals’ Bowling Attack Proves Too Much for Superchargers
The Originals’ bowling attack, led by Kathryn Bryce, who claimed a hat-trick split over her final two sets and finished with figures of 5 for 13, proved too much for the Superchargers to overcome. The win prevented the Superchargers from ascending to the top of the table, further congesting the race for the top spots in the women’s competition with one week remaining.
“A little bit [of regret at not reaching 100]. But if you’d told me this morning I would have scored that many runs, I would have taken it, and got the team in a winning position as well, which is most important,” said Mooney.
The victory sees the Originals strengthen their position in the Hundred, with the top of the table in the women’s competition becoming increasingly congested as the tournament reaches its climax.
