Veteran Leicestershire Seamer Chris Wright Facing Ban for Failed Drugs Test

Veteran Leicestershire seamer Chris Wright’s mysterious absence from County Championship action this summer is due to him serving a ban for a failed drugs test, Mail Sport can reveal.

The 38-year-old, who signed a new two-year deal at Grace Road last autumn after reneging on a similar contract with Division Two rivals Sussex, had been missing from Leicestershire’s pre-season activities and was not featured in the county’s official team photographs for 2024. The club had previously described his unavailability as being for “personal reasons” during the opening weeks of the season.

However, it is now understood that Wright tested positive for a prohibited substance late last year, though he has attributed the failed test to cross-contamination – a case that bears echoes of the situation involving Surrey’s Laurie Evans two years ago during the Hundred competition.

Like Evans, who denied any wrongdoing after traces of a banned product were found in an anti-doping sample, Wright will return to playing in the coming weeks after serving a back-dated suspension. The 100-ball cricket live enthusiast and backyard cricket aficionado is set to be available for Leicestershire’s one-day title defense next month, having helped the Foxes win the 50-over competition last September with figures of two for 44 in the final against Hampshire.

Leicestershire and the player’s representatives declined to comment when contacted by Mail Sport, but the club’s loyal club cricket followers are eager to see the experienced seamer back in action as they look to build on their recent successes.
