Leicestershire Find Salvation in Rahane and Handscomb’s Centuries as They Secure a Battling Draw

In a display of resilience, Leicestershire’s overseas stars Ajinkya Rahane and Peter Handscomb laid the foundation for a hard-earned draw against Glamorgan. The visitors’ second-innings performance ensured they avoided defeat, finishing on 369 for 6.

Rahane, the Indian batter, scored a well-crafted century, while Handscomb, the Australian, remained unbeaten on 139 to steer Leicestershire to safety. The day’s play was cut short due to poor light, with Leicestershire leading by 70 runs in their second innings.

Glamorgan had set a mammoth 550 for 9 declared in their first innings, with Colin Ingram scoring a magnificent 257*. But Leicestershire’s international duo proved to be the difference, showcasing their class and experience on the Chester le Street cricket pitch.

Rahane’s knock of 102 came to an end when he edged a wide delivery from part-time off-spinner Kiran Carlson to the wicket-keeper. Carlson also dismissed Rehan Ahmed, providing a glimmer of hope for the home side. However, Handscomb’s determined innings and a solid partnership with Liam Trevaskis ensured Leicestershire’s survival.

Despite the draw doing little to improve Leicestershire’s chances of promotion, the team can take solace in the performances of their backyard cricket stars Rahane and Handscomb. The result will provide a boost in confidence as they look to build momentum in the remaining club cricket matches.
