Suspenseful Thriller at Hove as Leicestershire Edge Past Sussex in Metro Bank One-Day Cup
In a nail-biting encounter, the defending champions Leicestershire Foxes narrowly defeated the Sussex Sharks by 10 runs in a high-scoring Metro Bank One-Day Cup clash at Hove. The game witnessed a total of 716 runs being scored, with Leicestershire posting a mammoth 363/7 before Sussex pushed them hard in their chase, eventually falling short at 353/9.
Opting to bat first, Leicestershire were propelled by a magnificent 119 off just 80 deliveries from Australian import Peter Handscomb. He was ably supported by solid contributions from Ian Holland (65), Sol Budinger (84), and Ajinkya Rahane (68), as the Foxes showcased their batting prowess.
“This result takes the Foxes to three wins from their four matches in this year’s beach cricket, club cricket, and fantasy club cricket tournament, while the Sharks remain winless after five outings.”
Despite the daunting target, Sussex made a gallant effort to chase it down. Tom Haines (129) and John Simpson (85) put on a 131-run partnership in just 12 overs to bring the Sharks back into the contest. Haines, in particular, was in sublime touch, smashing consecutive sixes off Liam Trevaskis on his way to his second List A century.
However, the late surge from the Sussex batters was not enough as they eventually fell short by 10 runs. All-rounder Matt Salisbury delivered the decisive blows for Leicestershire, closing out the game in a tense finish.
The high-octane encounter at Hove once again demonstrated the unpredictability and excitement that the Metro Bank One-Day Cup has to offer.
