Keshav Maharaj, the South African spinner, is a cricketer who lives and breathes spin bowling. In a recent interview from Trinidad, where South Africa and West Indies drew the first Test, Maharaj revealed his unwavering dedication to the craft.
“My passion is spin bowling. I love it. I can wake up at two o’clock in the morning and if you ask me to bowl, I’ll bowl,” Maharaj said. This sentiment exemplifies his commitment to the sport, as he is always prepared to put in the hard yards, regardless of the format or time of day.
During the first Test, Maharaj’s discipline and endurance were put to the test, as he bowled 40 overs from the Queen’s Park Media Centre End in West Indies’ first innings. This was the second-longest spell by a bowler in men’s Test cricket since 2001, a testament to Maharaj’s stamina and determination.
The 32-year-old spinner, who was the sole specialist spinner in the South African XI, recognized that he would have a heavy workload to shoulder. “Whatever format I play, I always keep my workloads as if I’m preparing for Test cricket,” he explained. This approach has allowed Maharaj to maintain his consistency and longevity, even when competing in limited-overs contests.
Despite the docile pitch, Maharaj’s unwavering commitment to his craft paid dividends, as he was South Africa’s best bowler of the match, taking four wickets in each innings. His ability to find turn and bounce on the third day kept the home side on their toes, and South Africa were banking on him to lead their push for victory on the final day.
Although the match ended in a draw, Maharaj was disappointed that South Africa couldn’t force a result, especially with the limited fixtures in this World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. “Draws don’t count for much. We obviously know there’s a World Test Championship at stake, but we’re focusing on each and every game,” he said.
