Cricket News: Jason Roy Signed as Replacement Player for Andrew Flintoff’s Northern Superchargers in The Hundred

Andrew Flintoff’s Northern Superchargers have brought in Jason Roy as a replacement player for the upcoming edition of The Hundred, after Brydon Carse was ruled out due to a betting ban.

Roy, a key member of England’s 2019 World Cup-winning ODI team, was released by defending Hundred champions Oval Invincibles over the winter, following a disappointing 2023 season where he averaged just 17.11. The 32-year-old opener went unsold in the recent draft, with his £100,000 reserve price deemed too high by the eight Hundred teams.

“However, the Superchargers have now secured Roy’s services as a replacement for Carse, who was set to play his fourth consecutive season for the team but will now miss out due to his recent suspension.”

Details of Roy’s contract have not been disclosed, as replacement players are able to negotiate their salaries directly with the teams, as long as they do not exceed the overall salary cap.

Roy’s availability for the Superchargers’ season opener against Trent Rockets on July 26 remains uncertain, as he is set to travel to the United States shortly to represent Los Angeles Knight Riders in the ongoing Major League Cricket tournament, with the final scheduled for July 28.

Flintoff, who will be taking over as the Superchargers’ head coach in the men’s Hundred this year, will be hoping that Roy can rediscover his form and help the team mount a strong challenge in the competition.
