Cricket Match Washed Out, Denying Anderson Farewell Preparation
Cricket enthusiasts eagerly awaited the second day’s play between Lancashire and Nottinghamshire at Southport, as it marked a significant moment in the career of legendary fast bowler James Anderson. However, their hopes were dampened as relentless rain washed out the entire day’s proceedings, denying Anderson crucial preparation time ahead of his farewell Test at Lord’s next week.
Despite the early showers, the umpires had initially planned to resume Lancashire’s first innings at 12.30 pm. Sadly, the prolonged rain returned, forcing the officials to eventually call off the day’s play at 4:05 pm. This was a particular disappointment for the spectators who had traveled to Trafalgar Road, hoping to witness Anderson in action in his first game of the season, which could have potentially been his last for Lancashire.
“Anderson is set to play his 188th and final Test match against West Indies at Lord’s, starting on July 10.”
While he had previously indicated his desire to continue his county career, England’s director of cricket, Rob Key, confirmed on Monday that the legendary pacer will stay on with the England team after the Lord’s Test, taking on a new role as a fast-bowling mentor.
Had play been possible on Tuesday, Lancashire would have resumed their first innings at 344 for 8, with skipper Keaton Jennings unbeaten on 188. This was only the second time in 31 days that play had been completely abandoned at Southport, where first-class cricket returned after a 12-year absence in 2011.
