IPL 2025 Player Retention: Teams Finalize Squads Ahead of Mega Auction
Ahead of the highly anticipated IPL 2025 season, the ten franchises have finalized their player retention lists. Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the upcoming mega auction, as teams strive to build their squads for the next chapter of the Indian Premier League.
On October 31st, 2024, ESPNcricinfo reported the complete list of players retained by each IPL franchise. Mumbai Indians (MI) have retained five key players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma. With a purse of INR 45 crore remaining for the auction, MI have managed to keep their core intact.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have retained five players, with Heinrich Klaasen emerging as their most expensive retention at INR 23 crore, surpassing the likes of Virat Kohli and Nicholas Pooran. SRH have retained the most overseas players among all teams.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained five players, including the charismatic MS Dhoni, who will continue with the franchise as an uncapped player due to a revived IPL rule. Dhoni’s retention at just INR 4 crore is a strategic move by CSK.
“The IPL 2025 mega auction promises to be an exciting event, as teams work to strengthen their rosters and build championship-winning squads.”
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have retained only three players, the second-fewest among the ten teams, with Virat Kohli leading the pack. The question of Kohli’s captaincy remains unanswered.
Delhi Capitals (DC) have retained four players, including Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel. The big surprise is the non-retention of Rishabh Pant, leaving DC with the task of finding a new captain.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have both retained the maximum of six players each, showcasing their commitment to their core squads. KKR’s retention of Rinku Singh and the non-retention of Shreyas Iyer and Mitchell Starc have raised eyebrows.
Gujarat Titans (GT), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) have retained five, five, and two players, respectively, leaving them with substantial purses for the upcoming auction.
The IPL 2025 mega auction promises to be an exciting event, as teams work to strengthen their rosters and build championship-winning squads. Cricket enthusiasts can look forward to an action-packed season ahead, filled with the thrill of IPL cricket.
