Indian Women’s Cricket Team Unveils Asia Cup Squad: Formidable Lineup Aims to Defend Title

On July 6th, 2024, the Indian women’s cricket team unveiled their 17-member squad to defend their Women’s Asia Cup title. The majority of the players, 15 out of 17, were part of the recently concluded T20I series against South Africa.

The team’s batting lineup looks formidable, with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana leading the charge at the top, followed by captain Harmanprient Kaur. Richa Ghosh and Uma Chetry will be the wicketkeeping options. The all-round capabilities of Pooja Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma are expected to bolster the team’s balance and provide flexibility in the playing XI based on the conditions.

“We have a well-rounded squad that can adapt to the conditions in Sri Lanka and defend our title,” said the team’s head coach.

Shweta Sehrawat, Saika Ishaque, Tanuja Kanwar, and Meghna Singh have been named as the travelling reserves for the tournament. The 100-ball cricket live event will be held in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, where all 15 matches, including the semi-finals and the final, will take place.

India’s campaign in the Women’s Asia Cup will commence on July 19th, as they take on arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening match. They will also face UAE and Nepal in the group stage, aiming to secure a spot in the knockout rounds.

The Asia Cup serves as crucial preparation for India ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled for September-October 2024 in Bangladesh. The team is currently engaged in a multi-format tour against South Africa, trailing 0-1 in the T20I series after sweeping the ODI series 3-0 and winning the one-off Test.
