Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim Calls for a Complete Reset in Team’s Approach to White-Ball Cricket

Veteran Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim has issued a scathing critique of his team’s performance at the ongoing T20 World Cup, describing it as the “lowest point” of his career. Imad, who came out of retirement specifically for this tournament, believes Pakistan’s struggles stem from a fundamental issue with their mindset and approach to the game.

“It’s all about your mindset. What mindset do you want to play the game with? You either play fire with fire, or you play your way,” Imad said at a press conference a day before Pakistan’s final league match against Ireland. “I personally believe that you should play fire with fire. And even if you lose, you can sit down and say to yourself that on that day we were not good enough.”

The 35-year-old argued that Pakistan’s talented squad has the capability to adapt to any style of cricket, but the team has been held back by a “fear of failure.” Imad emphasized that this mindset needs to change across all aspects of their game – batting, bowling, and fielding.

“The same ball can be hit for a six, a four, a single, and that same ball can take a wicket and a be dot ball,” he explained. “We compete with the world’s best teams. Their mindset has changed over time. We used to rule in T20 cricket. I think we have moved back a little now. Maybe our mindset [needs a change] – in all three areas.”

Imad acknowledged the personal criticism and attacks that follow poor performances, but urged the public to understand that cricketers are human and can make mistakes. He advocated for a more constructive, analytical approach to evaluating the team’s shortcomings.

“Cricketers have to do their job and analyse the cricket. They have to tell you what is right and what is wrong without getting personal,” he said.

Looking ahead, Imad believes this disappointment could be a catalyst for positive change in Pakistan’s white-ball setup.

“But is it all about how you react after the fall? This is bad but who knows this could be big for Pakistan? We could revamp, revisit and start playing white-ball cricket the way it should be played.”
