Guyana Amazon Warriors Solidify Roster with Retentions and New Signings Ahead of CPL 2024
Guyana Amazon Warriors have bolstered their squad for the upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season, retaining the services of last year’s title-winning captain Imran Tahir and signing Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
Gurbaz, who was part of the Amazon Warriors lineup in 2022, returns to the franchise after an impressive outing that saw him score 157 runs with two half-centuries in six matches. The team has also retained several other key overseas players, including Pakistani batters Saim Ayub and Azam Khan, as well as South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius.
“We are excited to welcome back Rahmanullah Gurbaz and to have retained the core of our squad that delivered the title last season,” said the Amazon Warriors’ head coach.
Alongside the international talent, the Amazon Warriors have kept hold of several big-name West Indian players, such as Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Romario Shepherd, and Keemo Paul. In total, the defending champions have signed 14 players so far, with three more set to be added through the draft in July.
The Guyana-based franchise secured their maiden CPL title last season, defeating Trinbago Knight Riders in a low-scoring final. They will begin their title defense on August 30 against the newly formed Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in North Sound.
The 2024 edition of the CPL will take place from August 29 to October 6, with matches being held in Antigua for the first time in a decade. In addition to Antigua, the tournament will also feature games in Barbados, Guyana, St. Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad & Tobago, with the National Stadium in Providence, Guyana, hosting the final.
