Hobart Hurricanes Opener Produces Stunning Display at the SCG
Hobart Hurricanes delivered a dominant performance, defeating Perth Scorchers by 72 runs in a high-scoring encounter at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The star of the show was Hurricanes’ opener Grace Lee, whose scintillating innings of 150 not out off just 65 balls propelled her team to a formidable total of 203 for 3.
Lee’s innings was nothing short of extraordinary. Her 51-ball century not only contributed a staggering 73% to the Hurricanes’ total but also included a world record 12 sixes, eclipsing the previous marks set by Grace Harris. In fact, Lee’s score and sixes tally were the fifth-highest and highest, respectively, in all women’s T20 cricket played in a Full Member nation.
“It’s one of those days, I won’t say everything came off the middle because it didn’t, but things just went my way. Coming through a little dip like that, having the support of the group and family was incredible.”
Coming into the match, Lee had a modest high score of 38 in five WBBL innings this season. However, she found her groove on the day, stating, “It’s one of those days, I won’t say everything came off the middle because it didn’t, but things just went my way. Coming through a little dip like that, having the support of the group and family was incredible.”
Lee’s dominance was further emphasized by the fact that her third-wicket partnership of 114 off 65 balls with Elyse Villani included just 14 off 19 balls from the latter. The innings was rounded out by an unbroken 73-run stand in 39 balls alongside Heather Graham.
Scorchers’ Struggles to Contain Lee
The Scorchers struggled to contain Lee, with their quickest bowler, Chloe Ainsworth, being the only one to find some success, finishing with figures of 2 for 17. However, Lee was given a life on 63 when Ainsworth’s delivery was dropped at backward point.
In response, the Scorchers never threatened to get close to the target, losing Sophie Devine on the first ball and Chloe Piparo to a run-out in the opening over. They were eventually dismissed for 131, falling short by 72 runs.
This commanding victory for the Hobart Hurricanes, their second-highest total in the WBBL, was built on the back of a truly remarkable innings from Grace Lee.
