In a gripping encounter at The Oval, Gloucestershire and Surrey played out a thrilling tie in the T20 Blast. Defending a total of 170-6, Gloucestershire’s David Payne delivered a superb final over, thwarting Surrey’s chase and securing a share of the points.
Payne’s clutch performance, which included a yorker to dismiss Tom Curran on the first ball of the last over, was instrumental in keeping the game evenly poised until the very end. Gloucestershire’s Strong Start
In the South, Gloucestershire’s strong start was led by opener Miles Hammond’s 33 off 25 balls, followed by a handy contribution of 40 off 31 deliveries from Beau Webster. This helped the visitors post their highest total of the competition so far.
Surrey’s Valiant Effort
Surrey’s chase was spearheaded by Ollie Pope’s 48 off 39 balls, leaving the home side needing only six runs off the final over. However, Payne’s exceptional bowling in the death overs denied Surrey the victory, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
The tie was the first of the 2024 season, following two similar results last summer, both involving Durham. This outcome allowed Sussex to claim the top spot in the South Group after their comprehensive win over Essex.
