Aussie Star Maxwell Reflects on ‘Beautiful’ RCB Exit Ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction
In a surprising move, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise has decided not to retain Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. However, unlike some of his counterparts, Maxwell’s departure from the team was marked by a ‘beautiful’ exit meeting with the franchise officials.
Maxwell, who has been associated with RCB since 2021, revealed that he was on a phone call with the team’s management for nearly half an hour after they conveyed their decision to release him. During this conversation, the officials explained the rationale behind their decision, and the two parties engaged in an insightful discussion about the team’s strategy and the way forward.
“It was a zoom call, they sort of explained to me the decision not to be retained. It was actually a very beautiful exit meeting. We ended up talking about the game for almost half an hour – talking about the strategy, looking to go forward. I was really happy with that,” Maxwell said on the Around The Wicket podcast.
The Australian all-rounder was picked up by RCB for a hefty ₹14.25 crore in 2021, but his performances in the last four seasons have been a mixed bag. In 52 games for the franchise, Maxwell scored 1266 runs, including 12 half-centuries, but his 2024 season was a forgettable one, with just 52 runs from 10 matches.
Despite the ups and downs, Maxwell believes that his RCB journey is not yet over, and he would “certainly like to get back there” if the opportunity arises. The franchise, on the other hand, has opted to retain Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal as their three players ahead of the mega auction.
“I wouldn’t say my RCB journey is over; I would certainly like to get back there. It was a great franchise to play for and really enjoyed my game there,” Maxwell said.
With a base price of ₹2 crore, Maxwell is expected to be a sought-after commodity in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, and his ‘beautiful’ exit from RCB could pave the way for a new chapter in his illustrious career.
