Former Captain Tom Abell Scores Unbeaten Century for Somerset

Former captain Tom Abell notched an unbeaten century, leading a strong Somerset response on day two of the Vitality County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. Abell, who relinquished the Somerset captaincy last year, scored 105 not out, guiding his team to 293 for 4 in reply to the hosts’ 360 all out.

Abell’s century came after a 157-run third-wicket partnership with Tom Lammonby (87), followed by an unbroken stand of 67 with James Rew. This robust performance from Somerset keeps them in the hunt to catch up with Division One leaders Surrey and Essex.

“Abell’s resolute display ensured Somerset closed the day trailing by just 67 runs, setting up an intriguing final two days.”

Earlier, Nottinghamshire had extended their first innings by nine overs, adding a third batting point before Somerset’s bowlers wrapped up the tail. Seamers Migael Pretorious (4 for 96) and Kasey Aldridge (5 for 95) were the pick of the Somerset attack.

The day began with Somerset looking to make inroads, and they did so through Olly Stone’s dismissal for 83, caught at second slip. Aldridge then claimed the final wicket to bowl Nottinghamshire out for 360.

In Somerset’s reply, Pennington struck early to remove Andy Umeed, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore (38) and the Abell-Lammonby partnership steadied the innings. Lammonby’s 87 came from 104 balls, while Abell’s unbeaten 105 came off 202 deliveries, including 12 fours.

Despite Nottinghamshire’s efforts to unsettle the visitors, particularly with the second new ball, Abell’s resolute display ensured Somerset closed the day trailing by just 67 runs, setting up an intriguing final two days.
