England U19s Clinch Thrilling 30-Run Victory Against Sri Lanka to Level ODI Series
England U19s secured a hard-fought 30-run triumph over Sri Lanka U19s at Hove, evening the three-match ODI series at 1-1. In a high-scoring encounter, Nottinghamshire’s Freddie McCann’s magnificent 174-run knock laid the foundation for England’s total of 360/7, despite some disciplined bowling from Sri Lanka’s Dinura Kalupahana, who claimed 5 wickets.
Chasing a daunting target, Sri Lanka made a blistering start, with Pulindu Perera and Gayana Weerasinghe’s 110-run partnership in just 14 overs putting them firmly on track. However, Farhan Ahmed’s impressive bowling and a stunning catch by McCann to dismiss Weerasinghe turned the tide in England’s favor. Although Perera scored a 64-ball 64, the visitors were unable to maintain the momentum and were bowled out for 330, falling short by 30 runs.
The England innings was powered by a 127-run stand between McCann and Noah Thain, during which the Sri Lankan fielders were penalized 5 runs for distracting behavior. Thain’s commanding 66 off 76 balls complemented McCann’s breathtaking innings, which included 22 fours and 3 sixes. Late cameos from Charlie Allison and Dom Kelly further boosted the hosts’ total.
“This thrilling encounter showcases the depth of talent in both the England and Sri Lanka U19 squads, setting the stage for an exciting decider in the series. Cricket enthusiasts can look forward to more high-octane action as these young cricketers continue their pursuit of glory.”
