Experienced England All-Rounder Moeen Ali and Wicket-Keeper Jonny Bairstow Excluded from New-Look White-Ball Squads
The futures of Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow in the England cricket setup appear uncertain after they were omitted from the national team’s new-look white-ball squads for the upcoming series against Australia next month.
Alongside the experienced duo, other notable absentees include all-rounder Chris Woakes and fast bowler Chris Jordan, both members of England’s 2019 World Cup-winning squad. Liam Livingstone has also been dropped from the ODI party, while Test captain Joe Root has been rested.
Youth Movement in England Squads
In their place, England white-ball captain Jos Buttler and interim white-ball coach Marcus Trescothick have turned to youth, with the T20 squad featuring several uncapped players, including Warwickshire’s all-rounder Jacob Bethell and batsman Dan Mousley, as well as Leicestershire left-arm seamer Josh Hull, who was only recently drafted into the Test setup.
The ODI squad also sees the inclusion of uncapped players, with the Barbados-born Bethell and Hampshire quick John Turner earning their first call-ups. Durham seamer Brydon Carse, who recently completed a three-month ban for betting violations, has been welcomed back into both the T20 and ODI squads.
Notable Inclusions and Comebacks
Saqib Mahmood, who played a key role in Oval Invincibles’ recent Hundred triumph, has been included in the T20 squad, while the in-form Jamie Smith, who has made an impressive start to his Test career, has been named in the 50-over squad as England begin their preparations for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next February.
“The exclusion of experienced players like Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow is a clear indication that England are looking to the future and building a new-look white-ball team,” said a cricket analyst.
