England Seek Redemption in T20 World Cup as Moeen Ali Calls for Calm and Ruthless Performances
As England’s T20 World Cup defense teeters on the brink of a potential first-round exit, Moeen Ali, the team’s vice-captain, has urged his teammates to stay calm and deliver two ruthless performances to rescue their campaign.
The 36-run defeat to Australia in Barbados on Saturday has left England’s qualification for the Super Eights out of their hands. Needing Scotland to lose their final match against Australia and boost their own net run-rate, which currently stands at minus 1.8, Jos Buttler’s men must thrash Oman and Namibia in Antigua this week to have any chance of progressing.
“It’s about being calm and not letting the outside noise affect us,” said Moeen. “We need to be more aggressive without being reckless, not overthink things and take those two teams down. We’ve got to go into them, almost throw the first punch and just keep going from there.”
The defeat against Australia has invited early questions regarding England’s strategy, just six months after their bleak 50-over World Cup exit in India. However, Moeen is adamant that the focus is solely on T20 cricket, where he believes England are the better side.
“My own personal thing is, I don’t care about that 50-over World Cup, that’s done. I think we’re better at T20s, I just think Australia were better than us on the day,” he said.
England’s attack is being bolstered by the return of the fit-again Jofra Archer, while Moeen emphasized the need for greater discipline, be it nailing the first ball of an over or closing out the last. The team’s predominantly right-handed batting lineup was also too easily contained by Australia’s better use of the ground dimensions, with Moeen’s promotion to No 5 reflecting this.
As England prepare for their must-win matches against Oman and Namibia in Antigua, the forecast for the next week on the island is predominantly dry โ a small positive for a campaign that is already listing.
