England Close in on Victory in Thrilling Test Against Sri Lanka
Old Trafford, August 23, 2024 – England have put themselves in a strong position to secure victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka, thanks to a brilliant maiden Test century from Jamie Smith and a determined bowling display on day three.
After beginning the day on 259-6, England were bowled out for 358, with Jamie Smith scoring a stunning 111 runs. The young batsman’s impressive knock, which included 14 boundaries, has now seen him score two fifties and a century in his first five Test innings.
Sri Lanka’s response got off to a shaky start as they found themselves 1-2, but half-centuries from Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis helped the visitors close the day on 204-6, with a lead of just 82 runs.
Chris Woakes was the standout performer with the ball for England, taking 2-34 from 12 overs, while Matthew Potts also bowled well, though he was unfortunate to only pick up one wicket despite creating several chances.
The only concern for England was the sight of Mark Wood limping off the field midway through an over, which will be a worry for the hosts ahead of the final two days of the match.
“With Sri Lanka’s lead just 82 runs and England in the ascendancy, the hosts will be confident of completing a victory on Saturday and taking an early lead in the series.”
