Durham Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive, but Kent Bows Out of Metro Bank Cup
In a thrilling encounter at the Spitfire Ground in Canterbury, Durham delivered a sensational seven-run victory over Kent in the Metro Bank Cup. The result keeps Durham’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive, while Kent has been eliminated from the competition.
Batting first, Durham posted an impressive total of 307 runs from their allotted 50 overs. Ben McKinney starred for the visitors, scoring a magnificent maiden professional century of 115 runs off 116 balls, including three sixes and 13 fours. Bas de Leede (47) was the next highest scorer for Durham.
Kent’s bowling attack was led by Jaydn Denly, who claimed 3 for 15, and Marcus O’Riordan, who took 3 for 36. However, the Spitfires’ fielding was let down by a couple of dropped catches that proved crucial in the final outcome.
In response, Kent mounted a strong chase, thanks to a regal 104 off 91 balls from Harry Finch, who struck a six and 13 fours. Finch shared a 183-run partnership with Jack Leaning (81) for the third wicket, putting Kent in a commanding position.
“The wheels came off for the home side as they lost six wickets for just 71 runs, allowing Durham to claw their way back into the contest.”
George Drissell was the pick of the Durham bowlers, finishing with figures of 4 for 38. In the final over, Colin Ackermann held his nerve to defend 17 runs and secure the victory for Durham.
The result means Durham remains in contention for the knockout stages of the Metro Bank Cup, while Kent’s campaign has come to an end.
