Northants Remain Winless as Durham Triumph at Chester-le-Street
Durham, 15th May: In a thrilling Metro Bank One-Day Cup encounter at the Chester-le-Street Cricket Ground, Durham secured a four-wicket victory over the struggling Northamptonshire Steelbacks.
Chasing Northamptonshire’s total of 260, Durham’s all-rounder Colin Ackermann played a pivotal role, scoring a magnificent unbeaten 108 to guide his side to a hard-fought win with 11 balls to spare.
Northamptonshire had made a promising start, with opener Prithvi Shaw smashing a 71-ball 97, but Durham’s spinners, led by Scott Borthwick, managed to slow down the run rate and peg back the visitors. Despite George Bartlett’s 34 and a late flourish from the lower order, Northamptonshire were eventually dismissed for 260 in the final over.
“Colin Ackermann’s composed century, coupled with valuable contributions from Ben Borthwick (40) and Bas de Leede (15*), ensured Durham reached their target with relative comfort.”
In response, Durham’s chase got off to a shaky start, losing both openers cheaply. However, a superb 133-run partnership between Ackermann and Alex Lees (55) turned the tide in the home side’s favor.
With this defeat, Northamptonshire have now lost all four of their matches in the competition and face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Durham’s second victory in the tournament keeps them in the hunt for a spot in the latter stages.
