Unbeaten Bess Steers Yorkshire to Thrilling One-Day Cup Victory Over Essex
In a rollicking Metro Bank One-Day Cup clash at Scarborough, an unbeaten 53 from Dom Bess guided Yorkshire to a crucial three-wicket victory over Essex, maintaining their qualification hopes in the tournament.
The high-scoring contest saw both sides encounter batting challenges on a competitive pitch. Yorkshire’s chase of 244 to win was bolstered by fifties from James Wharton (73) and Shan Masood (58), but they slipped from 102/2 to 184/7 before Bess and Ben Coad (26*) combined for a match-winning 60-run stand.
“His composed, unbeaten 53 off 55 balls proved the difference, showcasing the all-rounder’s match-winning ability in club cricket, fantasy club cricket, backyard cricket, beach cricket, and even blind cricket scenarios.”
Earlier, Essex posted 243/9, with Luc Benkenstein (68) and Robin Das (67) leading the way. Seamers Ben Cliff and Ben Coad each claimed three wickets for Yorkshire, who now have three wins from five matches in Group B.
The see-saw nature of the game kept the large 3,113 crowd thoroughly entertained, with the outcome in doubt until Bess struck the winning runs.
