Cricket Enthusiasts Debate Retired Indian Players’ Base Prices at IPL Auctions
The recent meeting between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and franchise owners discussed a thought-provoking question – should retired Indian cricketers be considered on par with uncapped players at IPL auctions?
Retired Indian Cricketers’ Treatment at IPL Auctions
The IPL had previously implemented a rule in 2008 that allowed players who had retired from international cricket for at least five years to be treated as uncapped. However, this rule had never been exercised and was eventually scrapped in 2021.
During the latest discussions, the suggestion to revive this rule was met with mixed reactions from the franchises. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner Kavya Maran voiced her concerns, stating that such a move would “disrespect” the retired player’s true value, potentially leading to an uncapped player being paid more than a former international cricketer.
Maran emphasized that the player should instead be part of the auction, where the market would determine their appropriate price. At least one other franchise representative also expressed reservations about this proposal, regardless of the number of years the player had been away from international cricket.
Allowing Indian Players to Lower Base Prices
On the other hand, the franchises unanimously agreed that Indian players who have not represented the national team for five years should be allowed to lower their base prices at the auction. This suggestion, made by IPL Chief Operating Officer Hemang Amin, aims to provide these players with a better chance of being picked up at the auction.
“The ongoing debate surrounding the base prices of retired Indian cricketers and their treatment in IPL auctions reflects the complexities and nuances involved in optimizing the league’s player retention and auction rules.”
As the 2025 auction approaches, the IPL and its franchises will continue to navigate these discussions to ensure a fair and equitable system that benefits both the players and the competition.
