Cricket World Cup: England Eye Must-Win Clashes Against Oman, Namibia

The defending champions England find themselves in a precarious position in the Cricket World Cup, needing to win their remaining two group stage matches against Oman and Namibia convincingly, while hoping for a favor from Australia against Scotland.

    The Scenario Facing England

The scenario facing Eoin Morgan’s side has been widely discussed since their 36-run defeat against Australia. With a net run-rate of -1.8, England’s only path to the Super Eight phase is to secure two wins, starting with the match against Oman on Thursday.

“Even that may not be enough, as Scotland’s clash with Australia on Saturday could prove pivotal. A shock Scottish victory would guarantee them a top-two finish in Group B, while a defeat that keeps their net run-rate above England’s would also ensure the Scots’ progress.”

This has raised the hypothetical possibility of Australia, already through to the Super Eight stage, manipulating the match against Scotland to the detriment of England. Australia’s Josh Hazlewood did not dismiss the idea when questioned, suggesting that they could “get close [in a run chase] and just knock it around and drag it out” to potentially knock England out of the tournament.

    Potential Team Changes

As for England’s team selection, there are hints that the top seven may remain unchanged, but tweaks to the bowling attack are possible. Reece Topley, whose left-arm swing has been overlooked so far, could get his chance, potentially replacing the pace of Mark Wood or the batting of Chris Jordan.

With their fate no longer entirely in their own hands, England will be hoping to take care of business against Oman and Namibia, while keeping a close eye on the Australia-Scotland match this weekend.
