Exciting News for Cricket Enthusiasts: T20s to Feature at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has expressed his enthusiasm for cricket’s return to the Olympic Games, set to take place in Los Angeles in 2028. This will mark the first time the sport has been part of the Olympics since 1900, when Great Britain and France competed.
Ponting believes this move will be highly beneficial for the sport, as it will open up new audiences and help cricket gain traction at the grassroots level in the United States. “The Olympic Games being viewed by so many people all around the world, it just opens up completely different audiences to our game that’s seemingly growing on a daily basis anyway. It can only be a real positive thing for the game,” he said in an interview with The ICC Review.
“Facilities and infrastructure and those things are going to be key, and how many [participating] teams they actually decide on. I think it’s only six or seven teams that they’re talking about, so qualification is going to be at a premium – how you actually qualify to get into the Olympic Games.”
The return of cricket to the Olympics will feature both men’s and women’s T20 teams, further highlighting the sport’s global appeal and commitment to gender equality. This development comes on the heels of the successful co-hosting of the men’s T20 World Cup in the United States earlier this year, which has helped to generate even more interest in the sport within the country.
As the countdown to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics begins, cricket enthusiasts around the world eagerly anticipate the return of the sport to the global stage, with the promise of increased visibility, grassroots development, and the continued growth of the game.
