Veteran Commentator Ian Bishop Lauds Jasprit Bumrah’s Evolution as a World-Class Bowler
Veteran commentator Ian Bishop has lauded Jasprit Bumrah’s evolution as a world-class bowler, highlighting his ability to adapt and utilize variations effectively.
“Jasprit is smart, a good communicator who thinks about the game,” Bishop noted. “He has developed variations and knows better than most bowlers when to use them.”
Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden echoed similar sentiments, believing Virat Kohli’s vast experience in assessing surfaces and adjusting to Caribbean conditions will be more crucial than his recent lean patch at the T20 World Cup 2024.
“Kohli in any conditions is a world-class batter,” Hayden said. “These [Caribbean] are venues where you have to construct an innings and think about the kind of realistic totals that are possible in these different venues.”
Hayden also backed Kohli to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, stating:
“If Kohli was going to be in the team, he needs to open. Virat at three, I don’t think we’ll get the best out of him. You can’t just turn up and blast 250 on these wickets, you need thinking cricketers.”
Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, has been in scintillating form, earning back-to-back Player of the Match awards against Ireland and Pakistan. According to Bishop, Bumrah’s unique action, ability to communicate his plans, and his repertoire of variations have made him a “generational bowler” who can trouble the best of batters.
“Sometimes they don’t get smashed because they get on to you,” Bishop explained. “Of course, when you develop that reputation… when I bowled with Curtly Ambrose, Matthew [Hayden] never put a foot wrong against Curtly because of his reputation, but he’d look to smash me. This guy is a generational bowler.”
