Cricket Legend Surprises Village Players in Dorset League Match

Cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara surprised village players by turning up to compete in a Dorset Cricket League match over the weekend. The 46-year-old, regarded as one of the best batters of the 21st century, made an unexpected appearance, scoring 68 runs for the Shillingstone CC side before being dismissed by spinner John Burns.

Sangakkara, who amassed 12,400 Test runs during his illustrious career for Sri Lanka, also showcased his bowling prowess, taking one wicket for 32 runs. The former wicketkeeper, who played county cricket for Surrey before retiring in 2015, stunned the local cricketers with his unannounced appearance in the third division match.

“We knew a couple of days before that he would be playing,” Burns told BBC South Today. “We were just hoping he would actually turn up and it wasn’t some kind of joke, when he did arrive it was just something special, it was amazing.”

Sangakkara’s unexpected visit to the club cricket game, which was held in the Dorset Cricket League’s third division, delighted the players and spectators. The legendary batter even bought a round of drinks for the participants, further endearing himself to the local cricketing community.
