Cricket Australia Announces 13-Player Squad for Test Match against India

On November 9th, 2024, Cricket Australia announced a 13-player squad to face India in the highly anticipated Test match in Perth. The squad features a mix of experienced players and promising young talent, with the selectors making some interesting decisions.

Nathan McSweeney, the 24-year-old South Australian opener, has been given the nod to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order. Despite not converting his recent starts against India A, the selectors believe McSweeney’s performances in domestic cricket have earned him the opportunity to make his Test debut at Optus Stadium.

In another noteworthy decision, Josh Inglis has been included as the reserve batter. Inglis, who has been in impressive form in the Sheffield Shield, will join the Test squad after leading Australia in the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Pakistan.

As expected, experienced fast bowler Scott Boland has been named as the backup to the trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood. Boland has consistently delivered at the Test level and will provide valuable depth to the pace attack.

“Chair of selectors George Bailey highlighted the selectors’ focus on picking the best six batters, rather than solely considering traditional batting positions. This approach has resulted in the inclusion of McSweeney, who has displayed the necessary attributes to thrive at the Test level.”

The 13-player squad is well-balanced, with the selectors providing Andrew McDonald and Pat Cummins with the options they require for the captivating Test series against India, which is set to commence on November 22nd.
